Charlie Gracie is one of a diminishing number of rock & roll innovators, who continues to actively perform. A native of South Philadelphia, he became the first successful recording star of the “Rock Era” to emerge from that neighborhood. In 1957, Charlie’s “Butterfly” topped the American and British music charts, selling over 3 million copies. His other late 50’s big sellers include: “Fabulous”, “Ninety-Nine Ways”, “Wanderin Eyes”, “I Love You So MuchIt Hurts” and “Cool Baby.” These hits bankrolled Philly’s famous Cameo-Parkway record label, making it a dominant force in the music industry for nearly a decade! At the height of his fame, Charlie frequently appeared on “Dick Clark’s American Bandstand”, “The Ed Sullivan Show”, and “Alan Freed’s TV Specials”. He headlined shows at the Brooklyn Paramount, the Casino Royale in Washington, the 500 Club in Atlantic City, the Opera House in Chicago and old Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.

Charlie’s star burned even brighter in Great Britain where he became the first solo American artist to bring rock & roll to the English concert stage. Precededonly by Bill Haley and the Comets, Charlie headlined London’s Palladium and Hippodrome–receiving outstanding receptions from the press and public. To this day, Charlie Gracie, is a much loved and respected performer the length and breadth of the United Kingdom.
While Charlie has earned a place in rock music history, this is only one dimension to a career that spans 60-years. His versatility makes him the consummate music man! Even now, Charlie enjoys a strong following at clubs and resorts along the Northeast Corridor of the U.S. Twice, annually, he performs tolarge audiences in countries such as: England, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Finland and Holland. His superb guitar playing elicited the highest of praise from music legends like George Harrison. The late Beatle once referred to Charlie’s guitar technique as “brilliant” in a March 1996 interview with Billboard Magazine. Paul McCartney paid tribute to Charlie by recording an updated version of “Fabulous” in cd series entitled: “Run Devil Run”. McCartney honored Charlie again that fall by inviting him to the album’s premiere party inLondon.
The new Millenium found Charlie on the road with Irish blues rocker, Van Morrison. Van, another Charlie Gracie admirer, commissioned him to open several shows on a West Coast tour–including the Wiltern in Los Angeles the House of Blues in Las Vegas and the Hilton in Reno. In 2007 Charlie was the subject of amade for PBS-TV documentary: “Fabulous!” The program recounted the story of his influential career- from humble beginnings in his South Philadelphia row home (735 Pierce Street) to concert stages around the world! Today, Charlie is still doing what he loves best. His reputation among his peers as a stellar, multi-faceted singer and musician is such that world famous rock stars regularly pay him tribute and volunteer to work with him. In the fall of 2011, ABKCO Records released his latest CD: “FOR THE LOVE OF CHARLIE!” produced by Al Kooper, who has recorded and produced the likes of Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. Among the artists performing with Charlie on the CD are: Graham Nash, (Crosby, Stills Nash & Young), Peter Noone (Herman’s Hermits), Jimmy Vivino (guitarist & music director; Conan O’Brien Show), Craig Ross (keyboards; Lenny Kravitz) and Dennis Diken (drummer; Smithereens), “What an honor to have these people on my album,” he says. “They don’t need Charlie Gracie, but they love what I put down as a foundation years ago, and I’m humbled that these artists would want to perform with me.”
It is obvious why Charlie Gracie has lasted the course longer than most. He is an accomplished musician and an exceptional talent – a devoted family man whoconducts himself as a gentleman both on stage and off. He is a credit to his industry. And what’s next for this Rockabilly Hall of Fame inducee? Is he readyto retire after more than six decades in the business? Hardly. “I’m getting started on my next album and I’m in the process of writing a book!” Charlie Gracie has only just begun to rock!
*Charlie was voted into Great Britain’s “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame” (1998) created by “Now Dig This” Magazine.
Johnny and the Jailbirds were formed at the end of 1973 when I moved from Charlton South East London to Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. I had been introduced to Rock ‘n’ Roll one winters’ day in 1969. The gig was at St. Micks Social Club in Kent and the band was Lee Tracy and the Tributes. I then became a member of the “Hound Dog” club Woodgreen and was found on most Saturday nights there and at the “Tunnel” pub in Greenwich. I saw all the bands at that time, Flying Saucers, Crazy Cavan, Freddy Fingers Lee, The Wild Angels, but the one that did it for me was the incredible Shakin’ Stevens and the Sunsets. He introduced this novice rocker to Johnny Burnette. I don’t remember any other band performing those songs and you knew that was it. I now wanted to sing. So after moving to Wellingborough I placed an advert in the local newspaper to recruit musicians interested in forming a Rock ‘n’ Roll Band. The response was immediate and after a few rehearsals and the firstgig in a local village club Johnny and the Jailbirds were born.
It wasn’t long before the band had gained a huge following on the Rock ‘n’ Roll circuit in the UK and abroad . Now were back with a brand new hot rockin’ line up & ready to hit the road again. THE NEW JOHNNY AND THE JAILBIRDS.
Check out the guys in action:

In America they called it “soul”, In Wales we call it “hwyl”, singing with heart felt emotion. commitment and passion. Penarth’s very own Retro-esque Indie musician /singer/songwriter John Lewis has it in spades. John is one of the organisers and founder of the near legendary Penarth Pilot Sunday night jam session. His former band the Rimshots made a huge splash across Europe. John has recorded for labels in Holland, Japan, Australia, London (the oh so cool Vinyl Japan), and Germany – a made in Wales Hank Williams Tribute that won a prestigious British Music Award as album of the year. As well as backing and recording with many of his heroes, rock and cult legends on weekend festivals all over the globe. John also headlined many London gigs where stars came to watch the messianic eyed charismatic lead singer and chief songwriter in action.
Under his alter ego name of Johnny Bach, he has four CDs available, recorded along with Gretsch Twangmeister Darrel Higham, last seen touring with the Amazing Imelda May, which John has supported many a time solo
Haven’t seen him, where can I catch this local treasure before St Fagan’s grabs him? Weeeeeeeeell John Lewis tours Solo or with his Trio all over. He also can be seen doing the odd Johnny Bach and The Moonshine Boozers gig and Rimshots re-union. As well as session work and playing guitar with Pontchartrain, So no excuses
Just keep up to date with Dates on his live page.

“It’s almost unbelievable but true; one of the most successful and legendary Rockabilly band of all times will hit the stage at this years hangar rockin’ 2010! We fly these gentlemen’s asses to Switzerland where they will perform for the first time in more than 10 Years! We know you love the John Lewis Trio and Johnny Bach but the Rimshots are a goddamn musical hand grenade and this is exactly what you’ll get. and nothing less!”
Paul Burkhalter Crazy Eventik Switzerland
“The Welshman with the invading voice has been quiet for awhile. Don’t worry – he’s back! As front man for the Rimshots and Johnny Bach he’s still all over the place and here we get another fine band from Mr Lewis – John Lewis Trio.
The new album is in the pipeline and music wise is drifting between the Rimshots and Johnny Bach. These 8 preview songs are pure rocking at its best and John shows again that he has managed it perfect to pack his musical talent, brilliant sense of humour and song writing in every song on this album. It doesn’t matter if its Hillbilly, Rockabilly, Country or Folk – he mix’s everything and creates tunes that are real ” ear catchers” and make you move around. Anyway I got this 8 track preview CD – I can say – I can’t wait for the whole album – just to “Waltz around the Kitchen” which is my favourite song on this preview”

Bob Ray and Tony Cotton better known as THE JETS have had 9 chart hit records and have become the top 50’s style R’n’roll band around!

IN THE BEGINNING!
First formed in 1974 as four piece Rock’n’Roll band , specialising in the ’50s era, then using the name BRAD. After various line up changes and learning the trade the band settled on a three piece line up and a name change in 1978.
THE JETS were now a family concern. Eldest brother Bob on lead vocals and double bass. Ray the middle brother on lead guitar and vocals, last but certainly not least youngest brother Tony on drums and yes, you’ve guessed it vocals. A three piece band playing with as much energy and full sound as a six piece outfit.
A recording career soon came around and the three brothers were snapped up by record company giants EMI, achieving Top Twenty hit records and albums (9 hit records listed in the Guinness book of hit records). Pop videos and of course TV shows, Top of the pops etc, gave The Jets valuable experience and chance to travel the world doing what they do best.
The Eleventh and latest Album, “Bolt of Lightning” is out now.
Touring has been in THE JETS blood since ’78, Scandinavia, Europe, Japan, USA have all been visited, headlining their own tours and as part of the bill on numerous festivals with such artists as Sting, Boy George, Robert Plant, Right Said Fred, Cliff Richard, Shakin’ Stevens, as well as Original ’50’s artists, Carl Perkins, Jack Scott, Elvis’ drummer D.J.Fontana (who actually played drums with the Jets), Charlie Gracie, The Crickets, The Teenagers and British rockers Marty Wilde, Wee Willie Harris, Billy Fury…etc.
If there is a multi-cultural festival happening and a LIVE Rock’n’Roll band with real live Guitar, Drums(not tapes, loops, sequencers or computers) and a Double Bass pounding away and being used as some sort of climbing frame, then THE JETS will be somewhere on the bill.
THEATRES TO THE N.E.C.
Not only will you find THE JETS playing to dance audiences but you will also just as easily find them appearing across the length and breadth of the country at various Theatres.
The Motorcycle Show at the N.E.C. played host to the Cotton brothers for three years in succession. Over 180,000 people attended the shows and The Jets are certainly not strangers to a lot of them, some would have definitely seen the lads Headline at the famous Isle of Man TT races street party , if not at two of the previous Bike shows. The lads regularly play various balls, parties, corporate functions, car shows, ski resorts….etc.
Plans for THE JETS include further tours of the Theatres and of course numerous club dates around Gt.Britain. Another trip to Japan, with dates in the pipeline for shows in the USA and Australia plus all the regular trips to Europe. With the release of the eleventh album “Bolt of Lightning”, the Jets will be promoting their unique brand of R’n’R world-wide….(to be continued)

ANY, AND ALL, PRE-BEATLES STYLE ROCK’N’ROLLERS AVAILABLE, FROM LOCAL HEROES TO LIVING LEGENDS.
Paul Franklyn “Legs” Barrett (born 1940 in Blackwood, Monmouthshire is the UK’s best known agent and manager of 1950s style Rock and Roll artistes, an author and previously a singer, songwriter and film actor. Barrett is the discoverer, mentor and first manager of the singer now known as Shakin’ Stevens during the 1960s and 1970s, but has also represented and promoted many more of the genre’s greats during a long and varied career.
Barrett pictured with Bill Haley’s Original Comets during 1980 UK filming of “Blue Suede Shoes”Manager and agent
Ever since first managing Shakin’ Stevens in 1969, Barrett has continued to be a professional agent, manager and promoter of 1950s style rock and roll artists including Wee Willie Harris, Bill Haley’s Original Comets, The Jets, Matchbox, Crazy Cavan & The Rhythm Rockers and Linda Gail Lewis (sister of all time rock great Jerry Lee Lewis). He has promoted and organised weekend long rock and roll themed events and major concerts all over the UK and on mainland Europe. Paul Barrett Rock and Roll Enterprises is now recognised as the principal agency for the genre.
Barrett’s spoken and bass vocals were featured on several early Shakin’ Stevens and the Sunsets albums, on tracks such as “Oh Baby” and “At the Hop”, he also spoke the commentary on the track “Superstar”. The album “I’m no J.D.” was re-released as “Shakin’ Stevens and the Sunsets” in the 1980s and was awarded a Gold Record. Barrett also sang live on stage with the band, adding his vocals to the Sunset’s mix.
Since the 1970s Barrett has regularly appeared as an extra in several feature films, the most notable being his major featured appearance as the “Table Monster” in the kitsch horror film ‘Bloody New Year’ (aka Horror Hotel (UK), aka Time Warp Terror (US)) directed by cult film-maker Norman J.Warren. Barrett was also featured in the rock ‘n’ roll movie Blue Suede Shoes and appeared in the 1987 TV drama mini-series Sins that starred Joan Collins.
During the 1980s Barrett collaborated with Hilary Heywood in writing the book “Shakin’ Stevens and the Sunsets” published by Star Books and W.H. Allen (London). Barrett originally wanted to call the book “Rocky Road Blues – The Story of a Rock ‘n’ Roll Band”. However the book was subsequently renamed and heavily promoted as a pop biography, becoming a short-lived best seller. Barrett’s book was more a humorous ‘warts and all’ tale of many behind-the-spotlights events during the band’s history and quite different to the several other official biographies.
