There is a fantastic new album out now on Wild Records by London artist Jake Allen and his fantastic band The Lawless Men. Its called “Grande Y Sucio” which means BIG AND DIRTY. This album is certainly both of those things.
Check out this review that a member of the Catty Town team did for UK Rock magazine:
I have followed Jake Allen’s career for some time and I think he is a very talented guitarist and singer (not just because he has strong Irish connections) and I was excited for him when I heard he had signed to Wild Records (another rockin’ organisation with strong Irish links) in LA. I didn’t think I would get the chance to review the album but delighted that I am. As a fan you might think there is a certain pressure on me to come up with a positive review, well the pressure soon faded when I heard the tracks supplied as this album is so red hot I can give it a positive review without any fear of being accused of bias. I have to declare right now also that I am a fan of Wild Records and a collector of their releases but I really and honestly think this will be seen as one of the strongest releases yet by that label. I mentioned Jake’s guitar playing earlier and this is a fantastic guitar album from the rockin’ instrumental “Stampede” to the Swamp Blues of “This Night”, this is a series of to die for riffs.
The album is chiefly self written and is a nice mix of Rockabilly, Blues and Country flavours with excellent songs and arrangements throughout. Jake’s band The Lawless Men (including his father Garry Tyrell Lynch on Bass and Stuart Handy on drums) give great support to his clear and distinct vocals which sound nicely melancholic on the songs about heartbreak and down and dirty on the tough songs about sex and violence (Parental Guidance: many songs have adult themes). Looking at some individual songs “Mess About Man” and its distinctive riff evokes Imelda May but deserves to be heard in its own right. My personal favourite track is “Cheap Trills” which is just a perfect mix of lyrics and performance and in any fair world would be a hit single. Other favourites include ‘Learn To Love Again” which is a great country rock track and “Lovin’ On My Mind” another fantastic uptempo rockabiily number. In fact this is a remarkably consistent album, well written, performed and produced and I feel confident it will move Jakes career onto the next level where it should be. Buy without hesitation!
The album is now available direct from Wild Records (link to their website above) or from all the usual Rockin suppliers both online and at events. THIS IS A MUST BUY if you have a passion for real Rock n Roll!
Wild Records is an independent record label based in Los Angeles, California. Started by Reb Kennedy, the label specializes in Rockabilly, Rock and Roll, Blues, Soul, Garage, and other roots music.
Wild Records was formed in 2001. The first band that was signed to the label was Lil Luis y Los Wild Teens, who recorded a Mexican rock and roll song called “La Rebeldona”. Since that first 45 R.P.M. release, Wild Records has worked to sign, promote, book, and record a total of 28 artists. They have been widely celebrated for their artists’ unique ability to make contemporary music while still remaining authentic and true to the original styles that have inspired them. Acts on the label regularly headline European and American Rockabilly and rock n’ roll festivals such as The Rockabilly Rave, High Rockabilly, Viva Las Vegas, and Let’s Get Wild. Wild Records and founder Reb Kennedy is the subject of an independent film release entitled “Los Wild Ones” in 2013. The film has toured the international film circuit to generally positive praise. The film is noteworthy in that it concentrates on not just music, but the personal relationships of the musicians inside the label.
